DR. GOODLUCK EBELE JONATHAN, GCON, GCFR: A COMPETENT AFRICAN VOICE FOR THE UNITED NATIONS

The time has come once again for Africa to speak with one voice in the pursuit of a more just, inclusive, and representative international order. As the global community prepares for the selection of the next Secretary-General of the United Nations, Africa has a compelling case to present to the world.

History reminds us that distinguished Africans have served humanity with honour at the highest level of the United Nations. The late Boutros Boutros-Ghali of Egypt and the late Kofi Annan of Ghana demonstrated that African leadership can inspire peace, promote multilateralism, and strengthen international cooperation. Today, Africa is once again blessed with a statesman of exceptional character, experience, and global respect: Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCON, GCFR, former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (2010–2015).

Dr. Jonathan is widely acknowledged as one of Africa’s foremost advocates for peace, democracy, dialogue, and good governance. His legacy extends far beyond Nigeria. Since leaving office, he has devoted himself to conflict resolution, election observation, mediation, democratic consolidation, and the promotion of peace across Africa under the auspices of regional and international organisations. His humility, calm disposition, integrity, and unwavering commitment to consensus-building have earned him admiration across political, religious, and national boundaries.

The office of the Secretary-General demands moral authority as much as diplomatic skill. It requires a leader who listens before speaking, builds bridges where others erect walls, and seeks peaceful solutions to complex global challenges. Dr. Goodluck Jonathan embodies these qualities. His remarkable decision to place the peace and unity of Nigeria above personal ambition during the 2015 presidential transition remains one of the defining moments of democratic statesmanship in contemporary Africa and continues to inspire leaders around the world.

Our consultations with representatives and stakeholders in several permanent member countries of the United Nations Security Council have reinforced the belief that the international community is receptive to the emergence of another African Secretary-General. This presents a historic opportunity that Africa must seize with unity, purpose, and determination.

We commend the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his leadership on continental and global affairs, and we respectfully express the hope that Nigeria will formally nominate Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan as its candidate for the office of Secretary-General of the United Nations. Such a nomination would not only honour an outstanding Nigerian statesman but would also advance Africa’s legitimate aspiration to provide principled leadership to the international community.

This is not merely a Nigerian project; it is an African cause. It is a call for the continent to unite behind a candidate whose experience, credibility, and global stature make him uniquely qualified to lead the United Nations at a time of unprecedented international uncertainty.

Africa must speak with one voice. Africa must stand together. Africa must present its finest.
